a First year teacher and your new classroom.

Here are some good first steps when decorating a new classroom as a teacher:

  • Create a warm and welcoming entrance – Decorate the door with a bulletin board, welcome sign, inspiring quotes, student art, etc. This sets the tone for the classroom.
  • Add student desks and seating – Arrange desks/tables and chairs in a way that fosters interaction and collaboration. Make sure sightlines to the board are clear.
  • Set up key classroom zones – Designate areas for whole-group instruction, small-group work, reading, computer use, independent practice, etc. Define the spaces.
  • Display anchor charts and posters – Hang up references, reminders, guides, rules, goals, etc. around the room where students can easily see them.
  • Add visuals that inspire – Put up artwork, photographs, motivational quotes, or prints related to the subject matter to stimulate thinking.
  • Incorporate elements with color and texture – Bring in rugs, comfortable seating, decorative storage bins and baskets, curtains, etc. to add visual interest.
  • Create a teacher’s space – Set up your desk, filing cabinets, computer, bookshelves, and supplies in an organized workspace for yourself.
  • Set up classroom libraries – Provide bins, shelves, racks, and reading nooks full of books/magazines for students to enjoy.
  • Add personal touches – Pictures of family, decor items that express your personality, fun memorandum, etc. can make the space feel special.

The first steps focus on organizing the room into functional areas and making students feel welcomed and inspired. Decorate in phases and allow students to help add finishing touches!
